In 1976, Jimmy Carter criticized incumbent Gerald Ford using an economic indicator created by Arthur Okun, which combined unemployment and inflation rates. Ronald Reagan later rebranded this measure as the "misery index" to attack Carter during his campaign, ultimately winning the presidency as the index declined under his administration.
